The Flora & Fauna of Mt Kosciuszko

Flora

Most of Kosciuszko National Park / Mt Kosciuszko is covered by alpine woodlands, mostly covered by the tree known as Snow Gum. In the southern wilderness areas wattle forests are dominating that area amongst the many different native trees in the park. The large Chinese Elm has become quite a common tree.

Much of the tree cover in the lower sections of the park was seriously burned in the bushfires of 2003. Fires are a natural feature of the park ecosystem, but it will take quite some time for the region to return to its pre 2003 condition and back to the way it was.

Fauna

Kosciuszko National park has nine separate wilderness areas because of all of the different types of endangered wildlife such as the Corroboree Frog, the Mountain Pygmy Possum and other animals.

In 2008 the wild horse numbers reached a staggering 1,700, with that figure still rising by up to 300 more horses a year, it has resulted in the relocation of many wild horses.
